Snails are one of the biggest pest problems. Most snails don't come out until night but if you turn over a rock, a board, or a pot you can usually find a few. Snail bait is sold at most garden centers. It is usually easy to apply. One problem is that a lot of the time people don't read the directions. Some bait needs to be applied more than once or the snails will come back.
Another method of dealing with snails is to pour beer into a small bowl and sink it into the ground to the rim. The beer will attract the snails. They will fall into the bowl and not be able to get out.
Gardenias are acid-loving plants. Besides your regular fertilization, you can add acid by buying a jar of pickles. Eat the pickles and pour the juice around your gardenia to give it an extra boost.
When you first put a plant in the ground it needs a long soaking each day to establish the roots. After two weeks or so you can start cutting back on the number of days you water. Always give the plant a deep soaking when you water.
Another problem may be that if the plant was raised in a shade house and is now planted in full sun it may be getting sunburned. Hopefully with a good watering schedule it will adapt or it may have to be moved to the shade.
