September - Mulch

Mulch is critical in South Florida not only for its appearance, but also for its moisture retention and the organic material it adds to the soil as it deteriorates. Cypress mulch is the most common.

Many tree trimming companies and cities will let you have ground mulch for free. The quality will depend on the machine used to grind it and the type of wood. Check around.

When spreading mulch a two-inch depth is desirable. Make sure you don't get the mulch too close to the plant, it needs to be kept back from the stem and trunk. Mulching up to a plant can cause rot or suffocate it. Many times seasonal plants are not mulched, the bed can just be outlined for effect.

The soil we have does not contain many nutrients nor does it retain water well, making mulch an important part of any landscape.
